Diagrid structure: Every obstacle is an opportunity. In disguise.

Jubilee Place's structural diagrid nodes being fabricated in the workshop

Jubilee Place’s impressive diagrid exoskeleton structure is an iconic design solution shaped by three environmental constraints.

  • The intention to make the Jubilee Hotel the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of the wider precinct empowered the team to design with a much wider audience in mind. This led to the creation of two new public spaces: a public plaza and an impressive new dining quarter.
  • The Clem Jones tunnel passing directly beneath the site meant that the building had to be lighter than a traditional concrete structure, prompting the striking and innovatively light steel diagrid design solution.
  • A desire for large contiguous flexible floorplates led to the idea of a cantilever above the rejuvenated and enhanced State heritage landmark Jubilee Hotel.

It’s exciting to see Robert Bird Group’s amazing structural design starting to come to life. Beenleigh Steel Fabrications are well progressed in the off-site fabrication of the diagrid nodes – visit our LinkedIn page to see more in the video. We are looking forward to seeing them on site and ready for installation soon!
